History of Smut
Smut: a piece of work (most often written) that depicts sexual acts
Smut.
Smut, smut, smut, smut.
All day, every day.
At this point, I have dedicated hours to reading, thinking, and talking about smut. And I have roped you all into this journey with me. You’re welcome :)
Most of the time, when I get on my “SMUNTH Soap Box” you all smile and nod to be kind to your sweet friend Liv. But sometimes you ask me questions. Most of the time, you ask: “What does the word smut actually mean?” And sometimes you have more questions about what smut entails, and I try my best to give you answers. But the truth is, there is a lot I still don't know about this sexy, fun genre of the literary world.
Is it even a genre? What is smut? Where did it come from? Who invented it? Was it even invented?
And if I am the smut connoisseur I claim to be, shouldn't I know the answers?
What I do know is this: smut is not new. Just like humans, sex is not new, and art depicting or describing it is not new either. Smut is older than most societies. So if it's that old, what's its history? Where did we start? How did we evolve?
These are the questions we are asking this month.
How did smut come to be and how did we get here? From ancient pottery to Fifty Shades.
So ladies and gentlemen, I am going back to school. I am going to whip out my study techniques from college and I am going to get all up in that b**ch.
I am going back to ancient Greece and I am reading what those crazy horn dogs were up to.
I am going to learn more about the secret lives of people in Victorian England.
I am going to read the work that was banned in the 40’s.
I am going to read your grandma's old sexy books.
And I am going into the AO3 archives.
No longer will we be uneducated!
So buckle up, get your backpack, notepads, and highlighters. ‘Cuz we are going to study sex the way our teenage minds could never even have fathomed. Follow me on TikTok @its.smunth to get your daily lessons and become sexy scholars!
It's Time for SMUTORY.
